Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.
Yes, it’s true. Kesha has inspired my writing. (Go ahead, roll your eyes or laugh…or cheer, I guess. Whatever!). I first heard her song “Take It Off” a few years ago on the radio. To be honest, I wasn’t totally inspired by its lyrics or beat. I saw it as a great workout song, not a “writing” one. Then I happened to stumble upon the music video and kaboom! I felt like I’d stumbled upon a few of my characters. The raggedness, wildness, and scruffiness of some of Kesha’s backup dancers, as well as the video’s rusty, worn down setting were exactly what I’d been picturing for my characters and the world they lived in.
Over the years, as my manuscript has gone through its ups and downs, I’ve always kept “Take It Off” on my book playlist, and I’ve used its music video for ongoing inspiration. And this past weekend, as I worked on my manuscript’s latest version, I used it again (er, and again and again and again…). I think I watched the “Take It Off” video at least five times as I wrote the scenes where my ragtag characters are introduced. I just love the rusted car, the worn out clothing, the slight edge of craziness and rebelliousness the dancers have.
So, without further ado, here’s the music video for Kesha’s “Take It Off”!
What song(s) are you in love with right now? Which one(s) offer you inspiration? Let me know! I’m always searching for songs that motivate my writing.
