Music Monday – Amen – Halestorm

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicThis past weekend, I officially began working on my new novel. To help kickstart my journey, I listened to one of my new obsessions: “Amen” by Halestorm.

halestormintothewildlifecd_638The number one thing I love about this song is its attitude. It’s great inspiration to help me develop my protagonist, who’s anything but an angel. He’s rebellious, selfish, and arrogant. He does what he wants when he wants. And he refuses to be controlled by others. Basically, he walks through life giving others the middle finger salute.

And this song is perfect to inspire that kind of “eff you” character.

I  also really like “Amen”s lyrics. They inspire all kinds of emotions and ideas:

A fire’s gotta burn
The world is gonna turn
A rain has gotta fall
Fate is gonna call
But I just keep on breathing
Long as my heart is beating

Someone’s gotta hate
It’s never gonna change
Gets harder everyday
This is one hell of a place
Keep your heart from freezing
To keep yourself believing

If you’re looking for an energetic, rebellious song that’s full of attitude, then check out Halestorm’s “Amen”.

Music Monday – I Wanna Rock – Twisted Sister

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicSince I spent last week working on random writing projects, I decided to once again keep things general today by spotlighting one of my “go-to” inspirational songs:

“I Wanna Rock” by Twisted Sister.

maxresdefaultI love listening to “I Wanna Rock” when I’m looking to infuse attitude in my writing. If I have a character who needs to act out, or stand up for themselves, or go against the grain, then I turn to this rock n’ roll song for inspiration.

“I Wanna Rock” also helps me develop conflicts in my stories.

I might not be a pushover in life, but I’m also not a conflict seeker: Soap opera drama. Fights. Backstabbing. Gossip. I avoid all of those things like the plague. Simply put, I don’t have patience for them.

Unfortunately, they make for great story fodder. So, in order for me to create and develop them, I need to listen to music that puts me in the Conflict Zone, like “I Wanna Rock” (or “We’re Not Gonna Take It”, another one of my Twisted Sister favorites).

Music Monday – Bad Moon Rising – Creedence Clearwater Revival

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicI know it’s Tuesday, but I was sick yesterday, so I’m going to pretend today is Monday for the sake of this post 😉

The past couple of days, I’ve been hooked on the classic “Bad Moon Rising” by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Creedence+Clearwater+Revival+CCRWhen I create my playlist(s) for my stories, I tend to add songs that my characters would listen to. Why? Because it helps me develop them better. When I listen to their music, it helps me understand who they are and what their tone, attitude, and characteristics are. And “Bad Moon Rising” happens to be one of my protagonists’ favorite songs.

ee06b9e2c1109158f92fdec1901b277cI also enjoy this song because it’s a fun one to listen to when writing suspense or horror. “Bad Moon Rising” is all about disaster and mayhem, and I’ll admit, those elements often appear in my stories.

I hear hurricanes a blowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
I fear rivers over flowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

So, check out “Bad Moon Rising” by Creedence Clearwater Revival to see if it inspires you!

Music Monday – Defying Gravity – Kerry Ellis

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-music

Well, everyone, I finally finished my second draft!

*cue confetti*

As I wrote the final climatic scenes of my book over the weekend, I found myself listening to Kerry Ellis’s rock version of the hit song, “Defying Gravity” from the musical Wicked.

329915There have been many variations of this song recorded over the years, but this is one of my favorites. Kerry Ellis adds so much oomph and power to “Defying Gravity” with her explosive vocals and rock n’ roll gusto. It makes me want to stand up and rebel against those trying to drag me down and hold me back. And that was the exact feeling I needed while writing my final chapters.

24826-something-has-changed-within-me-something-is-not-the-sameNot only does this song have the right tone and attitude for those “defying” moments in your story, but it has the lyrics to inspire them as well. Simply put, they’re amazing.

I’m through accepting limits
’cause someone says they’re so
Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I’ll never know!

So if you’re looking for a song that sparks rebellion, gives strength, and infuses attitude, then check out this version of Defying Gravity!

Music Monday – Back in Black – AC/DC

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicOn my way home from work on Friday afternoon, I set my iPod to shuffle, and after a few not-so-motivating songs, AC/DC’s “Black in Back” came on.

Dc-Logo-Nature-Ac-Back-In-Black-Acdc-Band-Heavy-Metal-51360Before I knew it, I was dancing and head jamming in my car.

Well, until I came to a stoplight and noticed the guy in the car next to mine staring at me like, “Uh, what’s wrong with you?”

I hate when that happens, LOL!

Anyway, after I hit the gas pedal and left my humiliation behind, I replayed “Back in Black”. This time, I listened more than danced, and as I did, I began using the rhythm and beat to choreograph the action sequences I’m currently working on. All of the punches and kicks, twirls and whirls. Pow, pow, pow!

By the time I sat down and started writing on Saturday morning, my creative cogs were spinning fast. And they kept spinning all day. From dawn to dusk, the words poured out of me and the action sequences I’d imagined in the car sprang to life.
